Another Dispute between Intel and AMD

x86 architecture licensing dispute between the Intel with AMD still continues to this day because each company interprets the contents of the license agreement individually.

Bruce Sewell, senior VP and General Council for Intel Corporation, said Intel’s x86 architecture license can not be granted Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to a third party that is GlobalFoundries Incorporated) without the permission of the company as the license is only granted to AMD according to the agreement of both parties in 2001.

But AMD said that the x86 architecture license can be transferred to GlobalFoundries incorporated as an AMD subsidiary. GlobalFoundries was founded by AMD and Advanced Technology Investment Company (ATIC). Chip business is the core business of GlobalFoundries.

In fact, Intel considered AMD to intervene commercial relations and Intel is considered to cross-license violations.

Bruce said that Intel has tried to reach settlement of disputes with AMD in the case of Intel’s x86 architecture license since October 2008. However, these measures have not succeeded until now.

Agreement in Intel and AMD x86 architecture license mentions this dispute can be resolved by a third party.
